Daniel M. McGuire, Sr., Brigadier General, U.S. Army National Guard (Ret.), 80, of Lebanon, passed away suddenly on Wednesday (May 25, 2016) in Marlborough with his wife, Ginger, by his side.

Born July 2, 1935 in Voluntown, he was the son of the late William McGuire and Florence (Petrowski) McGuire Purks.

Dan retired from the military as a Brigadier General after 40 years of service in the Connecticut Army National Guard.  He held many key leadership roles, such as Support Personnel Management Officer and Chief of Staff, as well as Director of the Emergency Management Office for the State of Connecticut.  Following his military retirement, he held two terms as Lebanon’s First Selectman, was a Justice of the Peace and was on the committee for the Rails for Trails project. Dan was known as a most generous man. 

Mr. McGuire was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Lebanon and had served on their Board of Trustees.  He was also involved within the Lebanon community with the Senior Center, Historical Society and the Democratic Town Committee.  He volunteered for many organizations including Hospice SECT in Norwich.

Dan was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, and enjoyed the outdoors, camping, boating, and fishing.

In addition to his loving wife, Ginger, Dan leaves 14 children (and their spouses), Daniel (Hailing) McGuire, Jr. of Norwich, Lynn (John) Bodnar of Mystic, Shelley Roy (Mike Collin) of Groton, Randall (Sophie) McGuire of Westerly, RI, Chris McGuire of Mystic, Lisa (David) Wilson of Mystic, Peter Gialluca of Texas, Anthony (Christina) Gialluca of Brookline NH, Joseph (Nora) Gialluca of Bow, NH, Gina (Gene) Farnan of East Berne, NY, Dawn (Mitchell) Weiss of Boothbay Harbor, ME, Martin (Diane) Gordon of Colchester, Michael (Tracy) Gordon of Bozrah and Diane (Curt) Adams of Lebanon; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Carol Pasieka of Mystic; his former wife, Helen (Phelps) McGuire of Mystic; and many extended family and friends. 

He was predeceased by his 2nd wife, Norma Lee (Hupp) McGuire on January 10, 2010.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday (June 1st) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd., Colchester.  Funeral services will be held directly at the First Congregational Church of Lebanon (Jct. of Rtes. 87 & 207) at 10 AM Thursday (June 2nd) followed by full military honors. Burial will be private in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.  Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Southeastern CT, 227 Dunham St., Norwich 06360 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
