Charles Bengston Sawchuk, age 67, of Canterbury, formerly of Colchester, fondly known as Chuck or “Mad Dog”, passed away peacefully at his home on June 3, 2026. Chuck was born in Middletown, CT on September 4th, 1958. Son of Dolores (Bengston) Sawchuk of Colchester and the late Walter Henry Sawchuk.
Chuck grew up in Colchester and graduated from Bacon Academy with the class of 1976. Chuck began his career working in the family business, Walt’s Country Motors, and ended his career at Falvey’s in Norwich. He was a car and motor vehicle enthusiast. Chuck was talented with mechanics and naturally gifted with anything involving nuts, bolts, and engines. He had a magnetic personality and was friendly with everyone he encountered from friends and colleagues to customers.
On February 15, 2019, Chuck married the love of his life Sherrie (Razee) Fletcher at St Joseph Polish Club in Colchester where he was a longstanding member. Chuck enjoyed spending time at the Polish club with his lifelong friends and neighbors. He always stayed connected to his Colchester community. Chuck was a perpetual teenager who never wanted to grow up. As his pastime he loved anything with an engine, go carts, dune buggies, car shows, four wheelers; he enjoyed building anything that would go fast.
Chuck was a devoted husband and father. He was a man who felt things deeply, always looking for a fun time and ways to make connections. He liked to pass family time by driving around with no destination, playing card and board games, and making events and dates special for those he loved.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Sherrie; his mother, Dolores; his daughter, Madeline and her husband, Curtis Flanders and their daughter, Sophia; his brother, William Sawchuk; stepsons, Michael and Joshua Fletcher; many nieces and nephews, including Tessa and Grayson who held a special place in his heart. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brothers, Walt (Corky) and John (Sudsy) Sawchuk.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, June 15th at 10:30am at the Swedish Cemetery, 184 William Street Portland, CT 06480. Following the burial, a celebration of Chuck’s life will be held at 12 PM at St. Joseph Polish Club, 395 S Main Street, Colchester.
