Elizabeth Jane (Coffey) Gross

Elizabeth Jane (Coffey) Gross, widow of the late Michael Edward Gross, of East Haddam passed away suddenly on August 12, 2022.  She was 77 years old.  Born on March 7, 1945 in Hartford, she was a daughter of the late Steven and Helena (Mozdzierz) Coffey.  Elizabeth, more fondly known as Betty, married her beloved husband, Michael in 1968.  The couple settled in East Haddam where they made their home and raised their son, Matthew. They shared 53 years of marriage before he predeceased her on January 21st of this year.  Betty retired in 2001 after a long and successful career as a teacher of the 3rd and 5th grades in East Haddam Public Schools. She was a talented gardener and her green thumb helped keep her home and community blossoming beautifully as she put her talent to use with the East Haddam Garden Club.   Betty’s home was a source of particular pride, as she made her gardens a welcome place for the hummingbirds that she loved so dearly.  Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew her as a sweet, kind, and loving lady.  She leaves her son, Matthew and his wife, Kanae Haneishi of Gunnison, CO; grandchildren Koji, Niko, and Sora; and many extended family members and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Coffey.  Betty will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in the CT State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown one year from now on June 9, 2023.  The Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester has been entrusted with care of arrangements.  For online condolences, please visit www.auroramccarthyfuneralhome.com
