Jeremiah Brown Obituary

Jeremiah Brown, of Vernon, CT, passed at the time of 11:11 on Juneteenth 2023, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 87 years old.  Born in Midway, FL on January 17, 1936, he was the son of the late Zed and Margaree (Cotton) Brown. Being one of eighteen children led to his unique understanding of family and relationships. At a young age he moved from Florida to CT and was raised by his sister Edna and husband Rev. John R. Madry. Jerry is a 1956 graduate of Hartford Public High School.  At HPHS, he was a member of Barnard School, Student Council, Good Citizenship Committee, Dramatic Club, Senior Boys Club, Orchestra and Band. After graduating Hartford Public High School, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1958 -1960.  His military experience served him well. The discipline, valor, and strength of character he developed would lead to a life-long commitment to teaching and training, both children and adults from his Jukido Martial Arts Academy in Coventry, CT.  Fondly known as Sensei Brown to countless students who benefited not only from his talent and techniques but also through the wisdom he imparted of perseverance, discipline, and devotion to every situation with each lesson taught or learned. Those lessons will be remembered and lived by the host of people who passed through the doors of his Dojo over the years. Additionally, he had a long and successful career, as a manager for the U.S. Postal Service in the Hartford Office. After retiring from the postal service, he began teaching and training as an instructor of Tai Chi and Yoga at Courthouse Plus in Vernon, CT.  Jerry enjoyed gardening, vacationing at Cape Cod, biking, attending musical theater, concerts, various sporting events, and quality time with his family and friends. He was an avid UConn husky fan. Most importantly, Jerry was fiercely devoted to his family, keeping a loving and guiding interest in all of them throughout their lives.  His loss will be mourned by many people, especially by his children, Jeremiah Brown, Jr. and Kelly Brown, Michele Brown-Quinn, Erika Brown Rozza and her husband William Rozza, and Jeremiah Brown, III and his wife Shannon Brown; grandchildren, Aaron and wife Muna, Sierra, Spencer, Sawyer, Connor, Lilyanna and Owen Brown, Joshua and Jacob Quinn, Liam Rozza; great grandchildren, Josiah, Juna, Ava, and Jia Brown and many extended family members and friends.  A special thanks to the love and care that was given to him in his final years from Gregory Bassos, Mary, Natasha, Rexford and Ahmed.  Funeral services will be held from the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford, Rd., Colchester with calling hours on Sunday, June 25th from 1-4PM, followed by a funeral service at 4PM. A Burial service will be on June 26th at 2pm in the Valley Falls Cemetery, 65 Valley Falls Rd., Vernon, CT with full military honors.
