Joan Williams Schroder, 94, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on the early morning of Monday, July 18, 2022. Born June 16, 1928, in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Jess and Anna (Havranek) Williams. Joan was a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s School of Nursing. Over the years she worked as a registered nurse at Windham Hospital and later went on to work for Connecticut General Insurance, Aetna, and ultimately CIGNA Insurance where she worked as a supervisor in the medical department until her retirement in 1993. In 1950 she married her husband, the late Walter E. Schroder, Jr.  They shared over 50 years of marriage together and traveled the world to nearly every continent until he predeceased her in 2003. She will be forever loved and remembered as a warm and loving mother who was always active in both her children's and grandchildren’s lives. She was a regular fixture at numerous Columbia sporting events while her children were growing up, and every member of the Schroder family can recall how they would receive a phone call on their birthday and hear Joan sing happy birthday to them. She is survived by her children Paul (Janet) Schroder of Norwich, Mark (Lisa) Schroder of Lebanon, Lynn Schroder and partner Kimberly Rowe of Holyoke, MA and John (Michelle) Schroder of Columbia; grandchildren Krista (Duane) Putnam, Colton Schroder, Andrew Schroder, Matthew Schroder and numerous other extended family and friends. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her brother Jess Williams, Jr.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 12 PM directly at the Columbia Congregational Church, 325 Route 87, Columbia, CT.  Burial will be private.
