Joan Lorraine (Fraser) Zimmerman (1935-2021), age 85, Amston CT

On May 26, 2021, Joan Zimmerman went gently into that good night, slipping away in her sleep.  We were lucky to have her in our lives for as long as we did. 

Joan was born in Somerville, MA on June 18, 1935.  She was so sweet that her parents said they found her in a sugar bowl.  She graduated from Danvers High in 1953, and lived in Danvers MA, East Hartford and Amston CT. 

Joan was an uncomplicated soul who always chose to be cheerful.  She was a caring and thoughtful wife, mother and friend.  She was swift to love, and made haste to be kind. Complaints were replaced with gratitude. (Although as matriarch, she did need to rein in her kids and husband on occasion.)  Rather than judge or swear, she laughed – and what a laugh.   

Family was very important to her. She was preceded in death by her parents Alexander Fraser and Dorothy Nesbit, sister Dolly Morris, and her son Doug Zimmerman.  

She will be sorely missed by her high school sweetheart and husband of 65 years, Larry E. Zimmerman of Amston CT; daughter Julie Z. Miller and son-in-law Charles H. Jr. of  Llano TX; son Glen A. Zimmerman and daughter-in-law Therese of NH; daughter-in-law Bet Zimmerman Smith of Woodstock CT and her husband Patrick; granddaughter Stephanie Jo Miller-Freitag and great-grandchildren Ava and Nash; neighbors; and special friends Joan Savage and Tina Brown.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11:15 a.m. at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester CT, followed by a lunch at the Zimmerman home at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, you can honor Joan’s life by giving love away, as she did every day.
