John William Furnia, 78, of Lebanon, passed away on April 3, 2025, at his home in Lebanon. Born November 15, 1946, at home in Au Sable Forks, NY; he was the youngest child of the late Walter C. and Florence (Shambo) Furnia. John enlisted in the US Navy in 1965 and honorably served our nation during the Vietnam Conflict. After completing 2-tours of duty as a Navy Sea Bee, he returned home and he married his wife, Jo Anna “Jodi” Newberry. John was the Foreman for the Town of Black Brook Highway Department until 1980. In 1982, John and Jodi moved their family to Connecticut. He worked for Electric Boat in Groton until his retirement in 2009. John was a devout Catholic and was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi in Lebanon and was also a member of the American Legion Post 180. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to music, playing guitar, woodworking, fishing and spending long hours out in the woods hunting. He is survived by his wife Jodi; his daughters Colleen Furnia (her partner Thomas Main); Renee May (her spouse Christopher); grandchildren Rachel Ellis, Wyatt May and Lizette May; his sister Elizabeth “Betty” Madrid; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings Clemis, Una Jaquish, Delmore, Julia McCullough, Daniel and Bernard. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday April 9, at 11 AM directly at the St. Francis of Assisi Church 67 West Town Street in Lebanon, CT. Burial will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Disabled American Veterans.
