John Ostrout Obituary

John Ostrout 77 of Hebron, CT passed away April 16, 2026. He was born to Elmer & Dorothy Ostrout. He is survived by his wife, Susan Ostrout and his sister, Marnette Fritz and brother, Larry Ostrout.

John was the proud stepfather of three children, Michael and his wife Trish Docker, Kathryn Salois Docker, and Thomas Docker. He loved his five grandchildren, Travis Salois and his wife Christina, Van, Sam, Shealyn & Chase Docker and one great grandchild, Theodore Salois.

John E. Ostrout, a dedicated leader in the arts community and lifelong advocate for public support of the arts, passed away peacefully. He leaves behind a legacy that shaped arts funding and cultural vitality across Connecticut and the nation.

John graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management from the Yale School of Drama. He began his career managing a range of performing arts organizations, including a ballet company, symphony orchestra, and theatres. As nonprofit arts funding was emerging, he joined the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, where he served for more than 25 years. Appointed Executive Director by Democratic, Independent, and Republican governors alike, John earned broad respect for his leadership and steady guidance. Under his direction, Connecticut rose from #44 to #1 nationally in per capita government support for the arts.

In 2004, John was appointed Director of State and Regional Partnerships at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., where he managed 40% of the agencys grant budget supporting state arts agencies and regional organizations. During his tenure, he helped launch nationally recognized programs including Poetry Out Loud and American Masterpieces.

He also served in leadership roles on the boards of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Most recently, he was honored to serve as Interim Director during the inaugural year of the School of Fine Arts MFA in Arts Administration Program.You gotta have class was a guiding mantra in the 1970s, and John embodied that ideal throughout his life. He moved with ease among the Yale Repertory Theatre, the Cohasset and Falmouth Playhouse, supporting renowned performers with both professionalism and warmth. He famously described the arts as the one industry that has not left the city, a phrase that reflected both his belief and his mission.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John will be remembered most for how he showed up for others. He was deeply loving, generous with his time, and fully present in every momentwhether with family, friends, colleagues, or community. He had a rare ability to make people feel seen, valued, and heard, leaving a lasting impression through his kindness, steadiness, and genuine care.

An Eagle Scout, John maintained an extraordinary commitment of more than 50 years to Troop 25 of the Boy Scouts, reflecting a lifelong dedication to mentorship, service, and the development of young people. His example quietly shaped generations through leadership grounded in integrity, patience, and encouragement.

Even outside of his formal roles, he approached life with curiosity and warmthonce stepping in as Head Chef during the demanding second week of Camp Kirkham, bringing not only creativity to the menus but a spirit of connection and care to those around him.

Johns life was defined not only by what he accomplished, but by how he made others feel. His presencesteady, thoughtful, and kindwill be deeply missed and long remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. John was also deeply devoted to St. Peters Episcopal Church in Hebron, Connecticut, where he was an active and committed member being a warden and vestry member. His faith was reflected in the way he livedconsistently showing up for others & strengthening the community around him.

A memorial service in celebrate of Johns life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11 am at St Peters Episcopal Church in Hebron, CT.
