Karen Pierson Gaucher, 83, widow of the late Joseph Paul Gaucher, of Hebron and formerly of Columbia and Ledyard, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Born December 14, 1937 in New London, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Ruth Pierson. Karen spent her childhood growing up in Groton. She was a graduate of Eastern University where she received her master’s degree in education. She then went on to teach at Ledyard Center School for over 30 years until her retirement in the early 90’s. Karen had a passion for teaching; her primary focus was instructing the 6th grade where she was beloved by her students. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved to share her feelings with her family through poetry. There was rarely a wedding, anniversary, birthday, or other milestone event in the family that was not accompanied by a hand written poem from Karen. She was an avid reader and loved to read to her grandchildren, creating a new voice for each character. A fierce UConn Women’s basketball fan and an everynight viewer of Wheel and Jeopardy; there were times when everyone knew not to call the house. Karen will be forever loved and remembered by her sons Jeff and wife Erin Gaucher of Columbia, and Jay and wife Terry Gaucher of Greenville, South Carolina, her grandchildren Elle, Corbin, and Jordan Gaucher, and numerous other extended family and friends. A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
