Raymond Robert Flaherty Obituary
Raymond Robert Flaherty, born on November 6, 1945, in Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at his home in Moodus, Connecticut, on May 14, 2025. A cherished educator, devoted coach, and tireless community advocate, Raymond dedicated his life to uplifting others. For decades, he inspired generations of students as a passionate social studies teacher and girls’ volleyball coach at Nathan Hale-Ray High School, where his wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering belief in the power of education left an indelible mark. Beyond the classroom, Raymond’s compassion was just as evident—he founded the Straight from the Heart program to bring volunteers to local soup kitchens, organized the delivery of homemade meals to families in need during the holidays, and ultimately served as a Medicare counselor at the East Haddam Senior Center. His legacy is one of kindness, service, and a deep commitment to trying to improve the lives of those around him.
Raymond found joy in life’s simple pleasures—traveling the world, tending to his garden, watching the Patriots win Super Bowls, and immersing himself in books. These passions not only enriched his own life but also became gifts he generously shared with those around him. A lifelong learner, he earned a master’s degree from Rhode Island College and proudly authored his own book on education: A Life of Teaching: Lessons Learned. Later in life, as he battled with Superficial Siderosis, he also published a pamphlet to raise awareness of the illness and its impacts.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Evelyn and Edward Andreas, and his brother, Joseph Flaherty. Raymond’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved him most: his beloved wife, Elaine; his son, Sean, and daughter-in-law, Janie; his sisters, Catherine and her husband Nicolas Oneppo, Joyce and her husband Jim Heddon, and Jane and her husband Jim Leveille. He was a proud and adoring Pop to Nora, Mia, and Calvin Flaherty, who brought him endless joy and pride.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Raymond’s life on Thursday, May 22, with visiting hours from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m., at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, CT 06415.
Raymond’s life was a shining example of the power of education, the importance of service, and the beauty of living with a full and generous heart. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester.
