Robert M. Stokes, 89, of Colchester, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, after a valiant third battle with cancer, on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. Born June 13, 1931 in Detroit Michigan; he was the son of the late Joseph and Simone (Libbrecht) Stokes. In 1952 he served our nation by enlisting in the United States Army during the Korean War. He received marksmanship awards, and received an honor award from the U.S. Navy for his excellent work on submarine missiles. In his younger years Robert excelled in bodybuilding, and won the Mr. San Diego title in a competition. He was an avid computer builder and operator; he built his own computer and would entertain his friends and family by making animated videos of them singing and dancing. Electronic engineering was his passion throughout his life, for over 38 years he worked at Interstate Electronics until his retirement in 1997. He is survived, by his loving wife of 58 years, Marianne Stokes of Colchester; his children Patricia (John) Wagner of Colchester, Nancy LoPriore of Hope Valley, RI, Tami (Gilles) Gaudreau of Plainfield, Michael (Laurie) Stokes of Groton, Christina Stokes of Pawcatuck, Julianne de Medici of Las Vegas, NV, Elaine (Michael) Joseph of Fort Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren Shawna, Tanya, John Robert, Becky, Brian, Sam, Jimmy, Eric, Travis and Aaron; 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and numerous other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son Shawn Rene Stokes; his brother Joseph Stokes, Jr. and sister Jeanne Wand. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday April 9, 2021 at 10 AM directly at the St. Andrew Church, 128 Norwich Ave, Colchester, CT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Robert to the American Cancer Society, the Diabetes Foundation, or Hospice Masonicare of Mystic.
