Roberta Ziegra Obituary


Roberta M. Ziegra, fondly known as Bobbie, of Salem, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023, with her family by her side.  Bobbie was 78 years old and born in Lawrence, MA. She graduated from Simmons College in 1966 with a BS in Nutrition and began her career as a Registered Dietitian at West Roxbury VA Hospital. She also worked at Backus Hospital and was an Adjunct Instructor in Nutrition at Three Rivers College Nursing School. Bobbie retired after working 17 years with the State of CT, Department of Developmental Services as a Registered Dietitian, serving many Group Homes throughout Eastern, CT.  

Bobbie married George Ziegra on November 9, 1968, in Lawrence, MA. The couple made their home in Salem, CT where they raised their three children.  Bobbie is survived by her husband George and her children and spouses, Jane and Vincent Martiny of Tewksbury, MA, Amy and Glenn Gray of New London, CT, Allan Ziegra of Lyme, CT; granddaughter, Siena Martiny; sister, Sarina Ryan of Plaistow, NH; and extended family members and friends.  She is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Sarina Morrell
Bobbie had deep roots in her hometown and believed in giving back to the community in Salem.  She was a leader of the Cadet Girl Scout troop with her daughters taking weekend trips and experiencing travel to Camp La Cabana in Mexico. Bobbie volunteered at the United Way Food pantry, served on the Salem Library Board of Trustees, and was an active member of the Friends of Salem Library as the Hospitality Chairman.  She hosted the Salem Lions Club annual tag sale for over 15 years and was recognized for her commitment and support of the community receiving the Salem Lions Humanitarian Award and Salem’s Unsung Hero Award.  

Bobbie was bright, caring, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved spending time with family and close friends, attending art exhibits and plays, gardening, cooking, reading and listening to Bruce Springsteen. Bobbie was an enthusiastic sports fan who enjoyed watching NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball and hosting legendary Super Bowl parties and family picnics.  Her loss will be felt throughout Salem and beyond and she will be remembered with love by all who knew her. 

Funeral services will be held at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd., Colchester, CT beginning with calling hours on Sunday, March 19th from 1-3 PM.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 20th at 10 AM directly at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 752 Norwich-Salem Turnpike, Oakdale, CT followed by a burial service at Salem Green Cemetery.
