On September 17th, the world lost a beautiful soul; Stephen Raphael Barreto, age 26, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning. Born in Fayetteville, NC on February 17. 1994, he was the son of Marcus Hurdle and Rebecca Barreto. Stephen played football for Bacon Academy; he graduated with the New London High School class of 2012. Stephen was always a hard worker; he worked as a pool attendant for Juliano’s Pools and also as a flooring installer for All Class Carpet.
Known to be funny, charismatic and charming, his presence would always light up the room. Stephen was a goofball, he loved to make everyone laugh and was always the life of the party. He was also extremely intelligent; Stephen loved to learn and to soak up all of the knowledge he could about absolutely everything, especially history. He loved music and enjoyed reading books but above all, Stephen loved his family beyond measure; he was very close to his siblings and his cousins. Stephen was a kind, compassionate and caring young man who would do anything he could to help everyone; he would truly give you the shirt off his back if you were in need.
Stephen will be forever loved and always missed by his mother, Rebecca Barreto; his father, Marcus Hurdle; his siblings, Danny, Leah, Latisha, Alaysia and Nick; his uncles, Ralph, Raymond and Marcy; his aunts, Zenaida, Ruthie and Lynette; his maternal grandparents, Ramon and Maria; paternal grandmother, Beverly; his niece, Leyhani; many cousins and extended family members; and many beloved friends. He was predeceased in death by his great grandmother, Margaret Hurdle; his grandfather, Tyrone Hurdle; his godfather, Ernie Torres; as well as 2 of his best friends, Enock Kazibwe and Kevin Ferreira who both passed away this year.
Walk through calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 24th from 4-7pm at the Aurora McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Rd. Colchester. On Friday, September 25th at 12pm, Stephen will be laid to rest in Cedar Grove Cemetery, 638 Broad St. New London; those wishing to attend should meet directly at the cemetery.
